Golden Jubilee Activities
The Talent/Variety Show sponsored by our Women’s Guild and directed by Barbara Lockhart and Tammy Tarby took place on Saturday night, February 4, 2006. Jim Vagias was the emcee, and he introduced the acts of our very talented parishioners. It was a evening of delightful songs, funny acts, jazzy instrumental groups, and even a musical quartet featuring our own Father Joseph. Refreshments provided by our Women’s Guild were enjoyed by all.
The Spring Adult Education Series featured two evenings in which we departed from the usual video presentations and discussions and held two Ethical discussions on March 17 and 24, 2006, in which we listened to two different stories, one each night, and then were presented a set of questions to answer as a group. Each group then reported their results to all the people present. It was interesting to hear how each group of people answered the questions and interpreted the story, because their answers were so varied. These stories were written by members of the steering committee for the these adult education meetings. We will participate in two more of these discussions on March 2nd and March 9th, 2007.
The Choir and Chanters have been preparing to record a CD of various types of Orthodox music from all the different traditions. The recording will reflect our parishes’ pan-Orthodox nature. We plan to include selections that highlight the historical development of the various genres of American Orthodox Music over the last half century. Our church musicians have been meeting almost weekly. The recording took place during President’s weekend in February, 2007.
The Women’s Guild Breakfast and 50/50 was held on September 10. 2006. After a beautiful breakfast hosted by our Women’s Guild and prepared by our kitchen crew, the 50/50 drawing was held. The 50/50 was worth $1,010.00 and was won by Jim Tweel. Today we also celebrated the procession of the Elevation of the Cross in conjunction with the opening of the Church School.
The Golden Jubilee Kickoff Party was held on September 30, 2006 at 7:00 PM. The party included good food, fun, and dancing to a D.J., who were spinning classic hits from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, and today. We were invited to dress the part or bring a prop that represent the decade of your choice. Besides the multi-media show which was presented, there was also a “Walking Though Time,” photo-journey of St. Anthony’s through the decades. This was the first part of a year-long audio/visual program prepared by our Archives Committee, chaired by Thelma Dacales and Leslie Carter. The search for photos continues throughout this year.
The Church School prepared a Golden Jubilee Calendar for 2007 which includes old and new parish pictures in celebration of our Golden Jubilee year. This calendar was distributed free of charge in January on Outreach Sunday as a momento of our Golden Jubilee year.
