Applications Being Accepted for Summer Music Institute for Youth: July 9-12

Chris Farha, the Diocesan Sacred Music Coordinator for the Diocese of Wichita and Mid-America writes:

This will be our fourth year for Youth Music Ministry at the Department of Sacred Music's summer Sacred Music Institute. Each year, the numbers grow but every year the students walk away changed, inspired and better equipped to serve their churches with a heightened awareness, more knowledge about the hymnography of the Church and a better skill set with which to vocally execute the music of the Church. They establish deep friendships with their peers who are of like mind and cultivate those friendships throughout the year. It is a wonderful program that I also feel blessed to participate in and hope that you might help promote it in your parishes.

2014 Michigan Deanery Teen SOYO Retreat

From Michigan, Kari Farah reports:

"April 4–5, 2014, we welcomed 55 teens from the Antiochian Michigan Deanery as well as the Flint Pan Orthodox Churches to a Lenten Retreat at Saint George Orthodox Church in Flint, MI, focused on the topic of Holy Communion. We were thrilled to have teens from seven different churches in attendance, and pray that future retreats will continue to grow in size as we grow together in Christ.

"With Fr. Michael Nasser from Holy Apostles Mission in Bowling Green, KY as our amazing speaker, our teens learned about what it means to be in communion with God, with the Church, and with each other. Father Michael discussed how preparing for communion has changed over time, and how we must work to be prepared to partake today."

Fr. Joseph Purpura Interviewed for OCN's "Come Receive the Light"

For the final installment in the Orthodox Christian Network's (OCN) May "Come Receive the Light" series about Sex and the Christian, OCN Executive Director Fr. Christopher Metropulos interviewed Fr. Joseph Purpura, chairman of the Antiochian Archdiocese Department of Youth and Parish Ministries. In the interview, Fr. Joseph spoke about the holiness of Christian sexuality, and how it is meant to enrich the marital life of couples.

"We have the Scriptures given to us as...a wealth of information on how God intends us to live out our lives," emphasized Fr. Joseph in the interview. "God places before us so many of the answers but we go seeking for information from our culture and end up at a dead end. We have to first begin with God's Word—it is lifegiving."
