Dear friend of St. Athanasius Academy:
His Cross (OSB: Psalm 22:5)
Our Monument to His Victory Over the Domain of Death
Paraphrased from Chapter 4, On the Incarnation, St. Athanasius speaks to the Lord's Cross:
Some might urge that it would have been better for the Lord to have arranged an honorable death for Himself and avoid the shamefulness of the cross. Yet this would have aroused suspicion that His power over death, was limited to the death He chose for Himself.
In turn, this would provide an excuse for disbelieving the resurrection. Therefore death came to His fleshly body – His enfleshment – not from Himself, but from enemy action. Why? So our Savior might utterly abolish, as foolishness, the fears and false teachings of Judaism, the Gnotics, and the Greeks.
