Life Out There
by Rebecca Shwayri (Jun. ’01)
On a daily basis, Orthodox teens and college students face a myriad of pressures that make choosing the straight path difficult. After all, fitting in with a new group of friends at college can seem impossible and succumbing to these pressures may appear to be the only way to gain acceptance. These pressures fall into two distinct categories: 1) issues that can impact one’s physical and psychological health; 2) matters that impact one’s lifestyle. From my standpoint, drinking and drug use would fall into the first category while going to church weekly and praying daily would fall into the latter. Our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ is our protection on the field of battle: “My defense is of God, Who saves the upright in heart” (Psalms 7:10). With His help, we can overcome these pressures
There are four methods that we can employ when facing these pressures. First, we must not rely on ourselves. Self-reliance and pride will only lead to our fall. “Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble” (Romans 13:16). Second, we must have a profound trust in God alone. Third, we must work towards our goal without ceasing. Finally, constant prayer should be our companion (Victory in the Unseen Warfare).
It may seem that lifestyle issues are less significant that those that impact one’s emotional and psychological health. However, failing in either category can place us in spiritual jeopardy. Christian perfection requires that we dwell in union with God. If we do not go to church or pray on a daily basis, then we cannot attain this perfection. We must constantly strive to attain this unity with God and His Church.
