REVELATIONS

REVELATIONS is the official monthly newsletter of the Fellowship of St. John the Divine of our Diocese. The purpose of the newsletter is to promote and highlight the progress of the different programs run by the fellowship. The newsletter also highlights local fellowship activity happening in your local community. Our hope is that it will serve you as a companion in your service unto the Lord.

In our search for an appropriate name for the newsletter, we were inspired by the apocalyptic book of the evangelist and patron of our Fellowship. May His prayers be with us! AMEN

Message from Fr. Paul Solberg

As a child I remember the warnings from my older siblings, that if I wanted to get a nice Christmas present from Santa Claus, I had better be as good as I could be this time of year. Why? “Santa’s making a list, checking it twice, he’s gonna find out who’s naughty and nice. Santa Claus is coming to town.” As a sincere young and impressionable boy, I was scared into being good so that I could receive something special.

Later, lyrics to another song were puzzling: “Nothing comes from nothing, nothing every could. … “Somewhere in my youth or childhood, I must have done something good.” –The Sound of Music-- I was curious about the meaning of this song. Someone explained that the song was about how someone found love and then assumed that some long-forgotten good deed was the source of this true love.

Is this how life works? Must we must be good in order for something good to happen? Is what happens today, based on the past? Well, in a way our past tends to shape us. For example, most would agree that being raised in a strong Christian family helps provide a secure foundation for life. It’s true, for better or worse, families shape our lives. The goal of Christian families is to help children grow up to love the Lord and His Church and the ever present awareness of God in their life. This is good.

But one is not limited by their past if one is a child of God. When we are in union with Christ our potentiality is beyond comprehension. No matter how bad some past events may have been, such trials cannot deny the presence of the Lord within us. In the light of Christ, even painful past experiences can be healed for ‘God works all things together for good.’

Our spiritual fathers specialize in helping their spiritual children journey to wholeness. Spiritual fathers help us to see that God is present and His grace at work, even in the worst times and events. And, He is always at work in our lives, helping us to bear better rather than bitter fruit.

We who have the faith of Christ are rooted not merely in our past but rooted in Him. We can fulfill our God-given potential as we are free to respond to Him and the world around us. We’re free to see ourselves as God sees us and then free to be ourselves as God frees us.

May the anticipation of this Advent Season bring a fuller measure of our rooted-ness in The One who’s nativity we will celebrate just weeks away.

The Nativity Sermon of St. John Chrysostom

"I behold a new and wondrous mystery!
My ears resound to the shepherd's song, piping no soft melody, but loudly chanting a heavenly hymn!
The angels sing!
The archangels blend their voices in harmony!
The cherubim resound their joyful praise!
The Seraphim exalt His glory!

All join to praise this holy feast, beholding the Godhead herein... on earth and man in heaven. He who is above now, for our salvation, dwells here below; and we, who were lowly, are exalted by divine mercy!

Today Bethlehem resembles heaven, hearing from the stars the singing of angelic voices and, in place of the sun, witnessing the rising of the Sun of Justice!

Ask not how this is accomplished, for where God wills, the order of nature is overturned. For He willed He had the powers He descended. He saved. All things move in obedience to God.

Today He Who Is, is born! And He Who Is becomes what He was not! For when He was God, He became man-while not relinquishing the Godhead that is His...

And so the kings have come, and they have seen the heavenly King that has come upon the earth, not bringing with Him angels, nor archangels, nor thrones, nor dominions, nor powers, nor principalities, but, treading a new and solitary path, He has come forth from a spotless womb.

Yet He has not forsaken His angels, nor left them deprived of His care, nor because of His incarnation has He ceased being God. And behold kings have come, that they might serve the Leader of the Hosts of Heaven; Women, that they might adore Him Who was born of a woman so that He might change the pains of childbirth into joy; Virgins, to the Son of the Virgin...

Infants, that they may adore Him who became a little child, so that out of the mouths of infants He might perfect praise; Children, to the Child who raised up martyrs through the rage of Herod; Men, to Him who became man that He might heal the miseries of His servants;

Shepherds, to the Good Shepherd who was laid down His life for His sheep;
Priests, to Him who has become a High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek;
Servants, to Him who took upon Himself the form of a servant, that He might bless our stewardship with the reward of freedom (Philippians 2:7);
Fishermen, to the Fisher of humanity;
Publicans, to Him who from among them named a chosen evangelist;
Sinful women, to Him who exposed His feet to the tears of the repentant woman;

And that I may embrace them all together, all sinners have come, that they may look upon the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world! Since, therefore, all rejoice, I too desire to rejoice! I too wish to share the choral dance, to celebrate the festival! But I take my part, not plucking the harp nor with the music of the pipes nor holding a torch, but holding in my arms the cradle of Christ!
For this is all my hope!
This is my life!
This is my salvation!
This is my pipe, my harp!

And bearing it I come, and having from its power received the gift of speech, I too, with the angels and shepherds, sing:
"Glory to God in the Highest! and on earth peace to men of good will! "

“For everything there is a season…”  (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

Falls Greetings to Everyone!!!

Just the other day, our younger son asked me if I knew that this was his favorite time of year, due to all the “bright fall colors gushing out of the hillsides and lining the rivers.”   However he had one caveat:         “But Dad, I don’t like the miserable weather that’s just around the corner!”    Each of us tends to love one season better than another.   That’s for sure!

Recently, our Diocesan clergy had the privilege to meet together with our beloved Bishop ALEXANDER for a spiritual retreat, a season of refreshment.  Our menu of nourishment included times for worship and prayer      learning and care     reflection and sharing.   Thank you Sayedna for providing such a nourishing, spiritual oasis.

As Orthodox Christians, our liturgical and ministry life is a continuous cycle of God’s grace.   Our nourishment, our sustenance, our daily diet of God’s blessings, is but a prayer away:  “Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.”   The fruit of this prayer brings many, mini oases with the Lord regardless of the demands of the day.

I hope we all will experience the every-present touch of God, moment by moment, whether home or away, at school or work, in leisure or worship, in snow or sunny beaches      becoming  better carriers of the Holy Spirit.   May His light radiate through us helping others come into contact with Him to “know that whatever God does endures forever;”  (Ecclesiastes 3:14).    The many seasons of His grace should not be a secret.   Every day, may we brighten our landscapes with colors of His grace.

Orthodox Unity in North America

During the NAC Mid-summer meetings, the Fellowship of St. John the Divine committed, among other goals, to educate ourselves, and spread word about recent developments towards Orthodox Unity, or more appropriately, REUNION, in North America. Here are some links for your reading:
  • Documents produced at the historical gathering of SCOBA in Ligonier in 1994: http://www.antiochian.org/1040
  • AGAIN Magazine, a subscription-based publication of Conciliar Press of our Archdiocese, issued a Special Issue on Orthodox Unity last Summer. A few articles are made available for free through Antiochian.org.
  • Our Hierarchs in North America had a "significant meeting" in Chicago on Oct. 3-6. You can read their daily releases and other releases on the SCOBA website. Of particular interest is the Official Communiqué issued at the closing of the conference affirming the need to bear witness together to our spiritual and moral concerns.

Message From the Editor

September marks the beginning of the Orthodox Calendar year. The first of the great Feasts is the birth of the Theotokos.

Many of us recently read “The Da Vinci Code”. The story, although entertaining, has created controversy by opposing the divinity of Christ. The story suggests that Christ fathered children with Mary Magdalene. The church, according to Brown, falsely ignores this fact and calls Christ the Son of God and thereby neglects “the sacred feminine”.

The story is fun to read and presents many seemingly convincing pieces of evidence that few people can confirm or oppose. Many people will unfortunately read this book and accept Brown’s thesis as truth because of his preamble stating that his story is based on facts. However, what many of these readers don’t realize is the wisdom of the forefathers of the Holy Orthodox Church.

One of the basic and most important aspects of Orthodoxy is reverence towards the Holy Mother of God. It is a woman who gave milk to the One who with a breath can shift the rotation of the Earth…who is the Source of Life…who gave birth to the One who cannot be contained…more honourable than the cherubim and more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim… higher than the heavens…and purer than the radiance of the sun… We devote a very large part of worship to the Mother of God and do it with humility and reverence. We end the church calendar with her death and begin it with her birth. It is not merely a prayer towards this particular woman, but rather a devotion towards motherhood in general. As we begin this Orthodox Calendar year with the birth of the Mother of God, I pray that we can all use Brown’s accusations to further our reading, and pay close attention to the words that we are singing, and most importantly, as a way to realize the importance of the Theotokos, the Sacred Feminine.

Message From Father Paul Solberg, Fellowship Spiritual Advisor

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord . . . he is like a tree planted along a riverbank, with its roots reaching deep into the water . . . “ Jeremiah 17:7-8

This summer, as always when family and friends visit us here in Western New York, we’ll be sharing yet another experience of the powerful Niagara Falls. One never tires of experiencing this wonder of the world. The Falls are particularly awe-inspiring this time of year with the bright blue water flowing faster and faster along the fresh green vegetation of the river bank, ultimately cascading with a thunderous roar. A wispy white mist flows high into the air, dropping like rain, even on a cloudless day. Such awesomeness is as a constant reminder of our Creator and Sustainer.

Soon, we’ll be celebrating the amazing Feast of Pentecost and the sending down of the Holy Spirit. What a joy and privilege to still have the Lord God pouring out the Holy Spirit upon His people. What a privilege in knowing this third person of the Holy Trinity and being expected to be carriers of the Spirit of God into our communities.

Through our relationship with and dependence upon the Living God, we can become strongly rooted, fruit-bearers along the River of Life. A California wife and mother wrote: “With their feet on the ground and their heads in the sky, trees are much like us: arms lifted up in prayer, deep roots watered by the Word of God. That’s what grounds us in the faith and steadies us in the stormy seasons of our life.”

I’m looking forward to meeting with all of you who will be able to attend the Parish Life Conference in Richmond Hills, ON. Throughout this much anticipated weekend, one can be certain, as we gather together in His Name, that the Lord will have a blessing for those who draw near to Him in faith. May we all be blessed as He pours out His spirit upon us becoming more deeply rooted in our Orthodox Christian faith.

Your servant in Christ,

The Rev. Fr. Paul A. Solberg

Fellowship Retreat Re-Cap

Father Maxym Lysack met with many of our young adults at this year’s Fellowship Retreat at St. George Church in Montreal. He spoke about the Holy Spirit and in particular, the Feast of Pentecost. Those that have heard him before know that he speaks with wisdom and authority that inspires all those who listen. Father Paul Solberg, from Niagara Falls, also joined us and was as stimulating and motivational as always. Thank you to the committee for organizing a great retreat! A review will soon be posted on the Fellowship website, so stay tuned...

Understanding Our Faith

I’m sure many of you have seen or read “The Da Vinci Code”. Although it is a fun, fast-paced murder mystery that many of us probably enjoyed, there are many ideas that are inconsistent with our Orthodox Faith. Many of our friends and colleagues will ask us questions regarding Christianity as a result of this film and it is our duty to correct public misconceptions. The Antiochian Orthodox Archiocese website has posted several articles published by Orthodox Scholars which address this very issue. I therefore encourage all of you to take a look and try to understand our faith so that we can better live it and explain it to others.

Camp Transfiguration: the light on the mountain

This will mark the 4th year of Camp Transfiguration, an Antiochian Orthodox Christian camp in Quebec. This camp is designed to enrich our young peoples’ lives through daily teaching, praying, appreciation of nature and fellowship with fellow Orthodox Christians. There are very few experiences a child can have that will give him/her such a direct and thorough exposure to Orthodoxy. This year, the camp will take place at Camp Tamaracouta, a boy scout-run facility, during the week of July 30-August 5, 2006. Please consider sending your children/godchildren/nieces and nephews to this camp. Also, the camp will only be as effective as the volunteers, staff and counselors that run it. That means you! Once again, click on the camp icon to learn more about the camp, see pictures from previous years and find out how you can get involved.

Brothers and sisters in Christ
Christ is Risen

The great ‘Great Lenten’ journey blessed hearts, minds and bodies, families, parishes and communities. Thanks be to God for this time of elevated spiritual awareness and growth. Many of you sought counsel from and were guided by your spiritual fathers during the recent Great Lenten walk of faith. What a joy it is indeed to have the privilege of keeping the rule of our spiritual Fathers!

In many parishes, times of confession and spiritual counsel significantly drop-off after Holy Pascha. I pray that we will remain faithful to seek and heed the spiritual counsel of those who oversee our souls not only during times of intensified fasting, almsgiving, prayer and worship but throughout the year.

In the letter to the Hebrews we read: “If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons.” (Hebrews 12: 7-8) The Lord gives His children spiritual fathers who love, guide and nudge … even chasten us.

St. Nikodemos the Hagiorite counsels that if we keep the rule of our Spiritual Father, we show that we are truly repenting and that we are a genuine child of God and of the Holy Church, which designated this chastisement. If, on the contrary, we violate the rule of our Spiritual Father, it is a sign that our repentance is not true, but false. It is a sign that we are not a genuine child of God and of the Church.

So, may the joy of Pascha continue in your hearts as you carry on the spiritual struggle of faith. May the transforming process into the image of our Lord be maintained. And, may the loving instruction, the rule of our Spiritual Fathers, not wane one iota … for Christ is risen. He is risen indeed!

Your servant in the Lord,

Father Paul

General Info
This year’s Parish Life Conference will be held in Toronto, Ontario by St. George Church from June 29 to July 2, 2006.

A Message from the Creative Arts Coordinator
To: Church School Directors
Since the PLC is not until the end of June, over the Canada Day weekend, I am setting the deadline for Monday, May 22nd.  That should give everyone, including me, enough time to get everything done.   Please send your entries via Express Delivery to:

Eleanor Kinan 1115 Vanderbilt Ave Niagara Falls, NY  14305-1645 (716) 285-1912 Res. (716) 435-7124 Cell

Please send them out in enough time for me to receive them no later than May 22nd.  You might want to set your own deadline for at least 1 week earlier so that you can check to make sure all entries meet the guidelines. The guidelines for our diocese can be found on the Archdiocese web site at www.antiochian.org but every church should have a manual on file. Please make sure, when the students turn in their photography entries, that they are the ones who took the pictures and are not in the photo. We cannot accept digital photos since the guidelines also state that the photos must be developed in a conventional manner.  If you have any questions, please get in touch with me as soon as possible. This year, I cannot extend the deadline for anyone as there is much to do on my end.  Make sure everything is turned in to you on time so you don't disappoint your students by not having their works entered for judging due to tardiness.   If you are not the Church School Director for your parish, please print this letter and make sure it goes to the right people.  Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Your sister in Christ,
Eleanor Kinan Festivals Coordinator

Oratorical Festival
Greetings in the Name of our Lord! I just wanted to let you know that we have recently upgraded the Oratorical Festival page of the Archdiocese website! Please check out www.antiochian.org/oratorical. It contains the Conference Theme and a wealth of resources for our diocesan coordinators to equip our youth to participate in the Festivals in all the Parish Life Conferences. As NAC Coordinator, I'll be the webmaster for the Oratorical page.

Within the coming weeks, we aim to post more "Recommended Readings" to help our teen participants research the topic so they can give the best orations possible. However, we only have ONE Recommended Reading right now, so I can use your help. If you know of any books, articles, or resources to add to this list pertaining to the Conference Theme (Joel 2:28), please forward that information to me. I'll then run it by Fr. Joseph Purpura for approval and posting.

Please do visit the site, and tell your teens to do the same! Please encourage your youth in your parishes to get involved with the Oratorical Festival. This is the perfect week to do just that, because most of our teens will be in church every night for the Holy Week services. I wish you a joyous Pascha!

In Christ,
Peter Samore

Food for the Hungry People

Just a friendly reminder to please return your contributions to Food for the Hungry People to Robin Nicholas as soon as possible.

Slumber and is roaming the hills and valleys.
Let us follow the footprints of Spring into the
Distant fields, and mount the hilltops to draw
Inspiration high above the cool green plains...”
-Khalil Gibran, The Life of Love XVI

This is a time of renewal. The snow is melting, washing away the salt and sand, the trees are growing impatient, on the brink of blooming, and the earth is emerging from hibernation. Khalil Gibran provides us with great images of gaining inspiration from the renewal of nature and the continuity and perseverance of Life. In the same way, we are called to follow Christ through peaks and valleys (by the way, a knoll is a small hill), for Christ, like spring, emerged from the darkness to provide Life to the world. What we will find is inspiration from the effect of His good works. Things are coming alive again. Let us become restored in mind, body and soul by He who “makes all things new”. I wish you all a blessed and peaceful Paschal season.

A message from our Spiritual Advisor, Father Paul Solberg

Greetings to all as we enter the Great Lenten period of God's grace!

"Who can say: 'I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin?' Differing weights and differing measures--the Lord detests them both. Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right" Proverbs 20: 9-11

One of the many purposes of the Great Lenten period which we are about to enter, is to be cleansed by the love of God. So we seek to fast from sin, from various food products, from idle time wasters, from entertainment and the like. Why? In part because we desire to gain control over our passions and be victorious over our sins.

Simultaneously, we participate in actions of giving, of kindness, of forgiving, of worship, and of study and reflection. Why? So that we might be a blessing to the world.

May you the faithful be guided and blessed on the spiritual journey ahead!
May you also forgive my sins, for they are many.

Your servant in the Lord,

Rev. Fr. Paul

Reflections on Guatemala...

Two daughters of our Archdiocese, Ramia Ibrahim and Nadia Lawand, just returned from a journey to the Hogar Raphael Ayau Orphanage in Guatemala City, Guatemala. It was an endeavour of service in which they provided much needed assistance to the nuns who protect, teach and guide over 90 children from the harsh realities of life in Guatemala. Follow this link to read Ramia’s reflections.

A few words from Father Paul

Dearest Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Greetings to you the faithful in the Name of the Holy Trinity!

During the 1st weekend of this month, Antiochian Christians will arrive at The Village for the 2006 Mid-Winter Conference for worship & prayer, reports & testimonies, food & fellowship and plans & commitments. I ask for your devout prayers for God’s traveling mercies as well as for the Lord’s wisdom during these deliberations. With grateful hearts, we ask for your prayers, taking nothing for granted.

As I write to you, I am reminded that just last week a semi-truck sheered- off 3 power poles sliding over 300 feet just outside the front doors of St. George. Thankfully, people and property were not damaged except for the truck and 3 huge utility poles. By the next morning, nobody would be able to tell that such an accident occurred that afternoon.

Coincidentally, only 4 days earlier, 40-45 cars were parked on the roadside at this exact location for a 17 year old boy’s funeral. He too had fallen asleep behind the wheel, fatally crashing. One near-miss and one tragic loss of life occurred within 4 days.

St. James wrote: “You who say: ‘Today or tomorrow, we’ll go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business, and make money. Why, you don’t even know what’ll happen tomorrow. What is your life? You’re a mist that appears for a little while, and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, if it is the Lord’s will, we’ll live and do this or that.” The Psalmist wrote: “… our days are like grass … each day has value if lived in the wisdom of the Lord.” Whatever our intentions may be, driving to school, to Divine Services, to The Village or just for pleasure, Orthodox Christians are taught to pray: “God willing.” Elder Cleopa, instructed: “Do not do anything without signing yourself with the sign of the Cross! When you depart on a journey, when you begin your work, when you go to study, when you are alone, and when you are with other people, seal yourself with the holy Cross … All of you should be sealed with the sign of Christ’s victory over hell.”

What comfort we have when we are united with Him Who holds our lives in His hands! Seeking to use our time wisely is our duty. God-willing, may we gratefully make the most of our opportunities.

Fr. Paul Solberg

The Children’s Relief Fund

The Children’s Relief Fund (CRF) is an organization which coordinates the sponsorship of needy children in Lebanon. It started in the 80’s and has supported hundreds of children through the generous donations of Americans and Canadians. Take a minute to read more about what the CRF does and how you can get involved in this very important outreach program by reading Diala Habib’s CRF announcement.

OCF Real Break

Calling all college students and young adults!
“What are you doing on spring break?” “Daytona beach, Cancun, Porto Vellarta…..yeah!”
Sounds like fun, but consider this...ever think about serving humanity during Spring Break? The Real Break program offers a one week trip to various destinations around the world where one will live in a Christian community and lend a hand in social programs at orphanages, or contribute to building homes for underprivileged families. Truly a “life changing experience”. Watch the Real Break video, look at some of the pictures from last year and think about it...

Message From Fr. Paul Solberg
Greetings to our much beloved Bishop ALEXANDER and all our Brothers and Sisters in Christ as we come into another year glorifying and serving the Triune God.

Entering a new year generally means individual resolutions aimed towards personal accomplishments. For us in this dynamic new diocese, we enter the new year united in love and obedience around our new bishop. We are parishes from two countries that have a common life in Christ whether from large or small communities of faith. Thankfully, we don’t labor alone in the vineyards of the Lord for we are one in Christ … and … we have unlimited resources just a prayer away.

St. John of Kronstadt wrote that we have help on our journey through life. Namely, we have spiritual guides who can assist our growth by teaching “us spiritual wisdom, (in) how to conquer sins, how to love God and our neighbor.” St. John wrote that “We ought to have the most lively spiritual union with dwellers in heaven, … the saints … as they are members of the one body, the Church of Christ, to which we sinners also belong, and the living Head of which is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. This is why we call upon them in prayer, converse with them, thank and praise, them. It is urgently necessary for every Christian to be in union with them if he desires to make Christian progress; for the saints are our friends, our guides to salvation, who pray and intercede for us.”

So may the year of the Lord 2006, bring each of us into closer bonds of love within our parishes and across our national borders under the leadership of Sayedna ALEXANDER. May we continue this service of love drawing upon the heavenly, saintly resources of which St. John wrote. And, may each of us join together in the challenges that lie ahead simultaneously participating with and drawing upon all the rich, infinite assets that our Lord so graciously provides for the welfare of his Church. Then by God’s grace, we may make the most of every opportunity as the Lord directs.

Your servant in Christ,

The Rev. Fr. Paul A. Solberg
Spiritual Advisor, FSJD

Elder Ephraim’s visit to Canada

Archimandrite Ephraim Kyriakos, a beloved monk from St. Michael’s Monastery in Biskinta, Lebanon, visited several cities in Canada during the month of October to enlighten our minds with asceticism. He truly is a beacon of Orthodoxy as he demonstrated to us acts of piety and monastic life in the midst of the loud and fast-paced North American lifestyle.
Read more about his visit here.

Food for the Hungry People

As Christians, we are called to clothe the naked, heal the sick, and feed the hungry. But how can we act upon this message? Do we give to beggars on the street, do we volunteer at the hospital? Food for the Hungry People (FFHP) is a Felloswship of St. John the Divine organization that facilitates just this, and allows us to fulfill the message of Jesus Christ by feeding those that are less fortunate. Read about how you can participate by reading a message by Elizabeth Lia, the the project’s coordinator in our diocese.
