The Department of Christian Education coordinates the Art, Poetry, Creative Writing and Photography festivals. The Department of Youth and the Fellowship of St. John the Divine coordinate the Bible Bowl and Oratorical Festival. The festivals continue to be sponsored by the Fellowship of St. John the Divine. As in the past, without the time and effort of their members the festivals would not be possible.
Creative Festivals 2011: An Opportunity
“Protect O Lord, unto many years, him who blesses us, and brings us thy grace.”
As you review the files below, and the lesson plans themselves, you will find more material than offered previously. Knowing that “losing class time to the festivals,” is a concern, please consider the rationale. First, as our texts do not provide much about priests, deacons, and bishops, this theme will require more “teaching” than those of previous years. For the middle and high school students, we have even provided MP3 downloads (lighthearted interviews with a priest and two deacons) that you can use as a part of your lesson, or in the background as the students work on the art projects. As always, you choose the amount of content you want to offer.
Second, those who receive Holy Orders are charged with leading us on the path of salvation. They are to sacrifice themselves for the flock, in service to us, just as Christ did. The lesson plans and resource materials should lead the children to a heartfelt appreciation of our deacons, priests, and bishops.
You are encouraged to view the material in this light and to consider scheduling more than one class session to introduce the children to the theme.
We have also provided several items for your bulletin board or classrooms and ideas for using the theme throughout the year. Let’s make this a tribute to those who care for our souls. Thank you for your patience, and may they be blessed who bring us God’s grace.

Note: There are only two Teaching Pics files, set 1 and set 2. You may wish to print these in color, and share them between classes. Likewise, there is only one Background Information File which is to be copied in parts (Deacon, Priest, Bishop) as needed. There is only one Ordination Rites—Excerpts file, which is likewise to be copied in parts as explained in the lesson plan. You may want to share these materials between classes as well to save paper.
