Memory Eternal! Khouria Mary Ellen Braun
September 8, 1931—April 29, 2016 (Holy Friday)

Mary Ellen was born to Ernest and Mabel Risell on September 8, 1931 in Turlock, CA, the second of four children. After graduating from Turlock High School in 1949, she attended Modesto Junior College and then San Jose State University, from which she graduated in 1953 with a degree in Elementary Education.

In 1951 Mary Ellen met her future husband, the Very Reverend Jon Braun, at Mt. Herman Christian Conference Center, located in the Santa Cruz mountains, where they were both on the summer staff. They were married in 1953 in San Jose, CA. From 1954 to 1970, they labored together in Christian youth ministry in Pasadena, Chicago, Minneapolis, Miami, Atlanta, Lake Arrowhead, CA and Leavenworth, WA as a result of their strong commitment to Christian service.

In 1970 the Brauns settled in Goleta, CA where Mary Ellen taught in the Goleta Union School District until 1997. Mary Ellen primarily taught first and second grade at Kellogg and Ellwood elementary schools, where she was adored by hundreds of children over the years. Upon retirement in 1997, she and Fr. Jon moved to San Diego where they lived for 14 years with Fr. Jon serving as pastor of St. Anthony the Great Antiochian Orthodox Church. She spent several years teaching at Evans School in La Jolla, CA. In 2011 they returned to Goleta to live near family.

Khouria Mary Ellen is predeceased by her parents and her sister, Lorene Stevensen. She is survived by her sister Shirley Doerksen and her brother Charles Risell, her husband Fr. Jon, son and Archdiocesan Trustee Daniel (Judy), Deacon Gary (Melissa), Timothy (Sue), Deacon Thomas (Wendy) and Peter. She also leaves behind 16 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren.

Mary Ellen was a founding member of St. Athanasius Orthodox Church in Goleta, California.

Christ is risen! The services for Kh. Mary Ellen Braun will be as follows:

Wednesday, May 4
7:00 p.m. - Trisagion Prayers of Bright Week

Thursday, May 5
10:00 a.m. - Funeral Service of Bright Week, followed by burial at Goleta Cemetery and Mercy Meal back at the church.

The funeral & mercy meal will take place at:
St. Athanasius Orthodox Church
300 Sumida Gardens Lane
Santa Barbara, CA 93111
(The church faces Hollister and sits between Patterson Ave. and the 217 Fwy.)
