Fr. Stephen was born in Greenville, SC in 1953, and educated in local schools. He was graduated from Furman University in 1977 with a B.A. in Classical Languages. He received his M.Div. from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in 1980, and an M.A. in Religion from Duke University in 1991. He was ordained in the ministry of the Episcopal Church in 1980 and served parishes in Columbia, SC, Simpsonville, SC, Anderson, SC, Durham, NC and Oak Ridge, TN.
In February of 1998, Fr. Stephen converted to Orthodoxy along with his wife and children. He was ordained to the priesthood in the Orthodox Church in March of 1999 and has served as the rector of St. Anne Orthodox Church in Oak Ridge since that time. He is the author of numerous articles on theology and modern culture. His books include Shaping Our Future (1994) and Everywhere Present: Christianity in a One-Story Universe (2011). He is the author of the popular blog site Glory to God for All Things , with an average of over one million views per year. He also authors the podcast Glory to God , heard on Ancient Faith Radio.
Fr. Stephen served as the Dean of the Appalachian Deanery in the Diocese of the South from 2003-2011 and has been very active in assisting with the founding of mission churches across the Appalachian region. In 2010, he was elevated to the rank of Archpriest. Two of his daughters are married to priests, one in the OCA, the other in Antiochian Archdiocese. He has 2 grandchildren.
When asked what early Christian Fr. Stephen would most like to be he replied comically " one who was not martyred"; but, seriously, St. John the Theologian. He liked St. John the Theologian because he came closest to experiencing and understanding the mystical presence of God and his love and mercy.
